Cathy Elliott – Double Bass

Cathy enjoys a varied career in the music profession performing regularly with the London Mozart Players and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. For twenty years she was a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields touring and recording extensively with them. She was also a member of the Rambert Orchestra.

Cathy has taught for the Junior Departments of the Royal College and Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Currently she teaches at Junior Academy and the specialist music school, the Purcell School. She also maintains a lively private teaching practice for students aged 5 to 18+. Cathy is an artist on the String Virtuoso website performing and presenting tutorials on double bass repertoire for beginners to grade 8 players.

Cathy loves teaching and was one of the pioneers developing good pedagogic foundations for young bass players back in the 1980s and 1990s. She has published various methods and repertoire for solo and ensemble bass under the imprint of Bartholomew Music Publications. She has advised Boosey & Hawkes on publishing projects, co-authored The Essential String Method and selected, arranged and edited pieces for the highly acclaimed double bass books in their Grade by Grade series.Cathy regularly advises both the ABRSM and Trinity Music Exams on string matters with particular reference to the double bass. In 2009 the International Society of Bassists recognized Cathy as a Young Bassists Ambassador and in 2014 she received an award for services to the European String Teacher’s Association.
